Room check: Matakauri Lodge, Queenstown

Getting there: There was a black BMW waiting for me at the airport.

Check in: I was greeted in the car door.

Room: The others in my personal group are staying in the Owner’s Cottage, top-grade lodging which has its own butler and chef and where high profile personalities have remained. It’s still a superior encounter although I’m in one of many deluxe suites. Heated flooring, push button open fireplace, a TV concealed behind a painting, big walk in wardrobe: I feel as a king.

Cost: Premium lodgings order premium costs.

What is so great about this place? Definitely the indulgence variable, from the heated floors to being pampered with spa treatments.

And also the awful? The only minor error I can find is the TV reception is only in conventional definition, not High Definition.

What is in the neighbourhood? You’re close to Queenstown and all the extreme actions are accessible nearby: skiing or snowboarding at the four principal skifields (The Remarkables, Coronet Peak, Cardrona and Treble Cone), bungy jumping, the Shotover Jet, tandem paragliding. Plus there are the not-so-extreme actions: the TSS Earnslaw ferry ride, mountainbike and hiking paths, Fergburger, investigating Arrowtown.

A room using a view? The living space along with the toilet have enormous floor-to-ceiling windows which means that you could see snow capped Cecil Peak and Lake Wanaka from any room.

The bed? Kingsize, with extra-broad feather pillows. You wake up to olympian views.

Toilet? There aren’t any drapes and I’m a little self conscious about folks from outside looking in while I’ve a tinkle. But, the single boat I see in the lake is the TSS Earnslaw way away in the space – and if I can not see the folks on board they can not see me.

Sound: None. I can not even see the lights in Queenstown at night.

Perfect for: Couples that desire to indulge in extreme extravagance.

It’s the closest I Will get to dwelling like royalty.
